The U.S. boxer won the WBC belt in December but never defended it. In April, he lost on points to Ryan Garcia, but the result was annulled after his opponent tested positive for doping.

As a result, Alberto Puello, previously interim champion, became the new WBC champion in the 63.5 kg weight class. Thus, in his next fight Puello will have to face Martin from Spain.
