Ward explains why Alvarez doesn't want to fight Benavidez

Andre Ward

Former world champion in two weight categories Andre Ward believes that Saul Alvarez doesn't want to fight David Benavidez, since he is a stylistically uncomfortable opponent for him.

“Caleb Plant won a lot of rounds against Benavidez. He took a lot of early rounds. David survived the storm and didn't panic. You have to give him credit for that. Because of this, Canelo did not fight him. No one likes to fight a guy who throws so many punches, especially when you don't throw so many yourself.

Canelo is economical in his punches, he relies heavily on power, timing and skill. Saul allows opponents to waste their energy, and then turns on. He believes that he will carry the fight through with strength and accuracy, and this has happened in many fights.

So nobody really wants to fight a dude like Benavidez. Add to this his height, arm span and lack of fear. He wants to kill himself,” Ward told Boxing News 24.
