Former UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski said he had a hard time gaining mass before his first fight against lightweight titleholder Islam Makhachev.
"You know what I learned? Weight training is a small thing compared to gaining muscle mass. In preparation for Makhachev, I ate so much ... I never thought I'd be crying about overeating.
I was eating 4-5 thousand calories a day. It was mostly healthy food - proteins and carbohydrates. It was a real nightmare," Volkanovski said on his YouTube channel.
Recall that last year Makhachev and Volkanovski met twice in the octagon, and both times the Russian won.
