Pacquiao wants Davis to move up in weight. In a recent interview, he laid out his terms:
"If he want, then if he come up to 147 then we can fight … 145 maybe."
This call-out comes after Pacquiao's surprising return to the ring on July 19, 2023. He fought to a majority decision draw against Mario Barrios at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It was his first fight since losing to Yordenis Ugas in June 2021, after which he announced his retirement.
Davis, the current WBA world lightweight champion, last fought in March 2023. He battled Lamont Roach Jr. to a split decision draw in a competitive 12-round fight.
When asked about facing the 'explosive' Davis, Pacquiao didn't seem worried:
"Oh that's not a problem for me because I'm experienced fighter."
Pacquiao's manager, Sean Gibbons, has made it clear they're not interested in a rematch with Barrios. He's pushing for bigger fights:
"F--k Mario Barrios. Who the f--k wants to see him? Manny Pacquiao beat Mario Barrios. F--k Mario Barrios. Not in a bad way, I like him, but f--k him. Manny Pacquiao beat Mario Barrios. Why should he, why does he need to fight him again? You know, if Manny wants to continue fighting, there's fighters like Rolly Romero, there's fighters like Gervonta Davis."
Gibbons' statement suggests they're targeting Davis and current 147lb WBA champion Rolly Romero as potential opponents.
Pacquiao's comeback fight against Barrios was a close affair, with many observers feeling the Filipino star did enough to win. Now, it seems he's ready for bigger challenges.
The ball is in Davis' court. Will he make the jump up in weight to face the legendary Pacquiao? Or will Pacquiao find another high-profile opponent for his next fight? Boxing fans will be watching closely to see how this story unfolds.
