Ennis, known as 'Boots', has a perfect 34-0 record. He's the current WBA welterweight champ and used to hold both the WBA and IBF belts. But he gave up the IBF title recently as he's planning to move up to super-welterweight.
In April, Ennis beat Eimantas Stanionis with a 6th round stoppage at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. That win made him the unified WBA and IBF welterweight champ. Now, there's talk he might fight Vergil Ortiz Jr. next.
But Keith 'One Time' Thurman has other ideas. In a recent chat with Mill City Boxing, Thurman took aim at Ennis. He said:
"I don't know what's going on with Boots not taking good fights, I heard the fight with Vergil didn't happen, heard the fight against Teofimo didn't happen, that would never happen to Keith Thurman, send me both of those contracts, I still don't got a contract, where's my contract? Send me both of them."
Thurman didn't stop there. He kept going after Ennis, saying:
"And after I do what Boots don't wanna do, send me Boots, it don't matter man. You think beating Stanionis you did something in life kid? You think you really did something in life? That man stands there in the ring like his name bro, Stanionis, he was just standing there bro."
Thurman's not been sitting around either. He beat Brock Jarvis on March 12 in an impressive showing. Before that, he won against Mario Barrios in 2022. Barrios now holds the WBC welterweight title.
Word is, Thurman will be back in the ring before the year's out. But who he'll face isn't clear yet. One thing's for sure - he's ready and willing to take on Ennis if the chance comes up.
For now, fans will have to wait and see if this fight between two of welterweight's best can be made. It's a match-up that could really shake things up in the division.
