Former Heavyweight Contender Reveals Surprising Take on Joshua-Wilder Showdown: "I Never Expected This"

Joshua, known as AJ, is aiming to become a three-time world heavyweight champion. He's coming off a tough loss, getting knocked out by Daniel Dubois in the fifth round at Wembley Stadium last September.

Wilder, nicknamed "The Bronze Bomber," has had a rough patch too. He lost four of his last five fights before bouncing back with a win over Tyrrell Herndon in June, stopping him in the seventh round.

Robert Helenius, a former European champion who's faced both men in the ring, shared his thoughts on a potential Joshua-Wilder matchup. Helenius has wins over Derek Chisora and Adam Kownacki on his record, but both Joshua and Wilder stopped him.

"I think it would be an interesting fight," Helenius told FightHype. "Of course, against Wilder the one round that it took it was like an accident [from me.] I didn't think he could fight on his back foot and he trained that, so he's also adapting [as a] boxer."

Helenius was knocked out cold by Wilder in the first round back in October 2022. Joshua stopped him in the seventh round in August 2023.

"[Against Joshua] I feel a little bit sorry that I didn't train for a longer time. I would have been in better shape and could have gone all rounds with him," Helenius added. "It's an interesting question. It would be a very, very successful fight for both I think."

The Finnish fighter found it hard to pick a winner between Joshua and Wilder. He was surprised by Wilder's ability to fight on the back foot and noted Joshua's power.

Current heavyweight king Oleksandr Usyk apparently didn't hesitate to pick a winner when asked, but his choice wasn't revealed.

As talks continue, fans will keep an eye on these two former champs. A fight between Joshua and Wilder would certainly grab attention in the boxing world.
