Alvarez started his professional journey back in 2005 when he was just 15 years old. Since then, he's racked up world titles in four different weight classes and became the undisputed champion in the super-middleweight division. His second reign as champion kicked off on May 3, 2023, when he defeated William Scull in Riyadh.
Throughout his career, Canelo has faced and beaten some of boxing's biggest names. He's got wins over Sergey Kovalev and Miguel Cotto under his belt. He also fought Gennady Golovkin three times between 2017 and 2022, coming out on top in their rivalry.
In a recent chat with Carl Froch, Canelo opened up about his retirement plans:
"You know, I feel great but I always say like 37-years-old I'm gone from boxing, so we'll see, but that's my idea."
But before he hangs up his gloves, Canelo's got some big fights lined up. He's set to face Terence Crawford in a highly anticipated showdown for the undisputed super-middleweight championship. This mega-fight will take place on Saturday, September 13, at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Looking beyond the Crawford fight, there's talk of a potential rematch if things go well. Riyadh Season's Turki Alalshikh has also mentioned other possible opponents for Canelo, including Hamzah Sheeraz and Chris Eubank Jr.
With about three years left in his career, according to his current plans, fans can expect Canelo to make the most of his remaining time in the ring. The countdown to retirement has begun for one of boxing's modern greats.
