Fury retired in January 2025 after losing twice to Usyk in 2024. The first fight ended in a split decision, while the second was a unanimous decision for Usyk. Many fans thought Fury would eventually come back, but they expected him to face long-time rival Anthony Joshua.
On Wednesday, Fury said the only fight that would bring him out of retirement was a third match with Usyk. Soon after, Saudi chief Turki Alalshikh posted on social media:
"The 'Gypsy King' will be back!!! I talked with him, and I have his word to have him in Riyadh Season in 2026 … We have a rabbit to hunt!"
Alalshikh used Fury's nickname for Usyk - "rabbit" - hinting at the upcoming fight. Fury then officially announced the bout on his social media.
The timing of Fury's announcement is interesting. Usyk is set to defend his WBC, WBA, and WBO titles against IBF champion Daniel Dubois at Wembley on July 19, 2025. Some boxing fans might not be thrilled about a third Fury-Usyk fight, given Usyk's two previous wins.
