Shannon Briggs is getting back in the ring. The former heavyweight champ has confirmed he'll fight again at 53 years old, nearly a decade since his last bout.
Briggs told IFL TV he's "1000%" sure about his comeback. He said he just met with Adin Ross in Miami, and they're planning a fight against Rampage Jackson for September or October.
The "Cannon" hasn't fought since May 2016 when he knocked out Emilio Zarate in the first round. That was just one of his 60 wins in 68 fights. Briggs holds the record for most first-round knockouts in the heavyweight division with 37. He also won the WBO heavyweight title back in 2006.
His opponent, Rampage Jackson, comes from the world of MMA. Jackson held the UFC light-heavyweight title from 2007 to 2008 and has wins over big names like Dan Henderson, Wanderlei Silva, and Chuck Liddell. At 47, he's the younger man in this matchup.
While Briggs is gearing up for his return, the heavyweight division keeps moving. Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Dubois are set to fight for the undisputed championship on July 19 at Wembley Stadium. Other top contenders like Joseph Parker, Agit Kabayel, and Moses Itauma are also in the mix, not to mention big names like Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, and Deontay Wilder.
We'll have to wait and see if Briggs vs Jackson actually happens. But for now, the Cannon is loaded and ready to fire again.
