Floyd "Money" Mayweather Jr is known as one of the best defensive fighters ever. He won world titles in five weight classes and beat big names like Manny Pacquiao, Canelo Alvarez, and Juan Manuel Marquez. But his dad, Floyd Mayweather Sr, believes his son should've lost to Oscar De La Hoya back in 2007.
The fight happened at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Mayweather Jr and De La Hoya were fighting for the WBC light-middleweight title. In the end, Mayweather Jr won by split decision.
Right after the fight, Floyd Sr talked to Larry Merchant on HBO. He said something surprising:
"I'm just gonna be honest with you, man. If you want to call fights by scoring, points system, who's throwing more punches, you had to give it to Oscar. If you're just going on a guy hitting a guy with single shots, you have to give it to my son."
Floyd Sr explained that Oscar threw more punches, which should count more in the scoring system. He said his son had good defense and landed single shots, but touching the opponent counts as scoring. So, even though it was close, Floyd Sr thought Oscar should've won based on points.
After this fight, there was talk about a rematch, but it never happened. We don't know why for sure. De La Hoya only fought twice more after facing Mayweather Jr. He retired in 2008 after losing to Manny Pacquiao in a non-title showdown.
'Money' is one of, if not the greatest defensive fighter of all time, and his undefeated record backs that up. But his dad's honest opinion shows that even in the world of boxing, there's room for different views on who really won a fight.
