Sugar Ray Leonard, a boxing legend, has named his top three greatest fighters of all time. The retired American champion, who won world titles in five weight divisions, shared his picks during a recent interview.
Leonard's career spanned from the late 1970s through the 1980s. He became an undisputed champion at welterweight and middleweight. As part of the 'Four Kings', Leonard fought and defeated Thomas Hearns, Roberto Duran, and Marvin Hagler at least once during the 80's. One of his most memorable victories came in 1980 with the 'No Mas Fight' against Roberto Duran.
In an interview with Fight Hype, Leonard revealed his choices for the greatest boxers in history:
"The best boxers? I would say Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Robinson and Rocky Marciano. But there is many, many more!"
Ali and Marciano, both heavyweight champions, left lasting impacts on the sport. Fans and analysts often wonder about a hypothetical matchup between these two pioneers of the heavyweight division.
Sugar Ray Robinson, the third boxer on Leonard's list, had an impressive career with just over 200 fights. He held the welterweight title from 1946 to 1951 and won the middleweight championship multiple times between 1951 and 1960.
Leonard's opinion carries significant weight in the boxing world due to his own illustrious career. His battles with other boxing greats of his era cemented his place among the sport's legends.
While Leonard named these three as his top picks, he made sure to acknowledge that many other great fighters have graced the ring throughout boxing history.
