Canelo Alvarez, the super-middleweight champion, has picked Joe Frazier to win in a fight against Mike Tyson if both boxers were in their prime. The Mexican star made this call during a recent 'Winner Stays On' game with Mail Sport Boxing.
Alvarez, who's been one of the best fighters of the last ten years, didn't hesitate when asked who'd come out on top between these two heavyweight legends. He firmly chose Frazier over Tyson.
Joe Frazier was a force to be reckoned with in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He held the undisputed heavyweight championship from 1970 to 1973 and famously handed Muhammad Ali his first loss in 1971. Frazier's career wrapped up in 1981 with a split decision draw against Floyd Cummings. His previous fight had been a loss to George Foreman in 1976.
Mike Tyson burst onto the scene in 1985 and quickly made a name for himself. He became the WBC champion in 1986, making him the youngest heavyweight champion ever. Tyson grabbed the title by beating Trevor Berbick in the second round.
Tyson recently made a comeback to boxing after almost 20 years away from the ring. He faced Jake Paul in a controversial eight-round showdown at AT&T; Stadium in Arlington, Texas last November. Paul ended up winning on points.
Canelo's pick of Frazier over Tyson came during a quick-fire round of questions. It's an interesting choice that's sure to get boxing fans talking.
