Jose Luis Castillo will step back into the ring at 51 years old. The Mexican boxer plans to face Ruslan Provodnikov in a rematch on Saturday, June 7, in Krasnoyarsk, Russia.
Castillo's name often comes up when discussing Floyd Mayweather's undefeated record. The two fought in April 2002, with Mayweather winning by unanimous decision. Many fans and experts, including Oscar De La Hoya, Freddie Roach, and Bob Arum, felt Castillo should have won. Unofficial scorer Harold Lederman had it 115-111 for Castillo.
Mayweather went on to cement his legacy as one of boxing's greats. He retired in 2017 with a perfect 50-0 record after beating UFC star Conor McGregor in a crossover bout. His career included world titles in five weight classes and wins over Oscar De La Hoya, Canelo Alvarez, and Manny Pacquiao.
Castillo hasn't fought in over a decade. His opponent, Provodnikov, last stepped into the ring in 2016, losing to John Molina Jr at the Turning Stone Casino and Resort in Verona. The two have met before - Provodnikov stopped Castillo in the fifth round of their 2014 clash.
The SOKOL Fighting League announced the bout on social media. Given the fighters' ages and time away from the sport, it's likely to be an exhibition contest.
