Floyd Mayweather Sr thinks Oscar De La Hoya should have won the fight against his son, Floyd Mayweather Jr, back in May 2007. The father and former trainer of the undefeated champ shared his thoughts on the bout that took place over 15 years ago.
Mayweather Jr retired with a perfect 50-0 record. He beat some of the best in the game, including Canelo Alvarez, Miguel Cotto, and Manny Pacquiao. His last fight was a 10th round stoppage over UFC star Conor McGregor at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in August 2017.
The fight with De La Hoya, known as 'The Golden Boy', was billed as 'The World Awaits'. It ended with Mayweather Jr winning by split decision and taking home the WBC light-middleweight title.
But Mayweather Sr doesn't agree with the judges' decision. In an interview with Larry Merchant on HBO, he said:
"I'm just gonna be honest with you, man. If you want to call fights by scoring, points system, who's throwing more punches, you had to give it to Oscar. If you're just going on a guy hitting a guy with single shots, you have to give it to my son."
He went on to explain his reasoning:
"My son had good defence, he caught a lot of punches with his shoulder and his arm, but it's still about a guy throwing punches. If he touches you, he's scoring … I thought the fight was a close fight, it's just where the point system goes. If you look at the point system, who's touching who the most … You're gonna have to give it to Oscar if you're going by point system."
Mayweather Sr's comments show he values punch output over defensive skills when it comes to scoring fights. Even though his son was known for his incredible defense, he feels De La Hoya did enough to win based on throwing more punches.
The fight was a big deal when it happened, and fans hoped for a rematch. But it never came to be, leaving many boxing enthusiasts disappointed.
