Mike Tyson won't face a lawsuit over rape accusations after an unidentified woman dropped her case. The former heavyweight boxing champion got the news recently when the accuser voluntarily withdrew her lawsuit.
The woman had claimed Tyson raped her in a limousine after they met at an Albany nightclub. She initially said it happened on March 1, 1991, but later changed the date to March 1, 1990. In January 2023, she filed an amended complaint, saying she suffered physical, psychological, and emotional injuries.
Judge Mitchell J. Katz denied the woman's request to amend her complaint on February 4. He said she didn't show due diligence in figuring out the exact date of the alleged rape. The judge also pointed out that medical records and a hospital bracelet indicated an event in 1989, which wasn't related to Tyson.
Daniel Rubin, Tyson's attorney, shared his thoughts on the outcome:
"The accuser's lawyer told me they're withdrawing the complaint. We're happy with this result - a complete withdrawal without any compensation. This lawsuit should never have been filed. It's the right outcome."
On the other side, Darren Seilback, the accuser's attorney, expressed disappointment:
"We're really disappointed the court didn't allow us to amend the complaint. It's a shame the case got dismissed on procedural grounds. We stand by our client's account of what happened and support her 100 percent."
The case ended with a letter filed in U.S. District Court confirming the accuser's decision to drop the lawsuit. Tyson won't have to pay any compensation or make any concessions. Still, these allegations will likely continue to affect how people view his legacy, even though the case has been dismissed.
