Alvarez has fought world champions from super-welterweight all the way up to light-heavyweight. He's only lost twice - to Mayweather and Dmitry Bivol. Crawford, on the other hand, has found most of his success at welterweight. He beat Errol Spence and Shawn Porter to become the undisputed champion in that division.
The fight with Mayweather in 2013 was huge. It sold 2.48 million pay-per-views, which was a record at the time. The gate at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas brought in over 20 million dollars. Mayweather won that fight on points.
But Canelo thinks the Crawford fight will top it. He said in a recent interview:
"I think it's going to be bigger than the Mayweather fight."
When asked if he thought it would generate more pay-per-view buys, Canelo simply replied:
"Yeah I think so."
It's a big statement, considering how massive the Mayweather fight was. But Crawford is a big star in his own right. He'll be stepping up two weight divisions from 154lbs to 168lbs to face Canelo. That's a huge challenge.
Before the Crawford fight, Canelo has some business to take care of. He's set to face William Scull in May for the IBF title. If he wins, he'll be undisputed at 168lbs again.
The boxing world will be watching closely to see if Canelo can back up his big talk. A fight with Crawford in September could be one for the ages.
