Anthony Joshua has a better chance of beating Deontay Wilder, according to boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. The multi-weight world champion shared his thoughts on the potential heavyweight clash in a recent interview.
Joshua and Wilder, both former heavyweight champions, never fought each other when they were at the top of their game. The two fighters were known for their powerful punches and knockouts, but their paths didn't cross when they held titles simultaneously.
Recently, both fighters have faced setbacks. Wilder lost two out of three fights against Tyson Fury and suffered a defeat against Joseph Parker. His last fight ended in a stoppage loss to Zhilei Zhang in June, marking his fourth loss in five fights. At 39 years old, Wilder's future in the sport remains uncertain.
Joshua, on the other hand, lost his titles to Oleksandr Usyk and was stopped by Daniel Dubois in September in his attempt to become a three-time world champion.
Despite these recent struggles, Jones believes Joshua has the edge. In an interview with iFL TV, he explained his reasoning:
"That's a tough fight but I think Joshua has a better chance of winning that fight. I don't think Joshua is as damaged as Wilder. Wilder with Parker showed he looked like he didn't really want it so we'll see what Wilder shows up."
Jones pointed out that Joshua seems less affected by recent losses compared to Wilder. He also noted Wilder's performance against Parker, which he felt showed a lack of desire.
Since his last fight, there have only been rumors about Wilder's return to the ring. The Bronze Bomber's comeback plans remain unclear, leaving fans and experts speculating about his future in boxing.
While both fighters are past their prime, a matchup between Joshua and Wilder would still generate significant interest in the boxing world. Jones' prediction adds to the speculation surrounding this potential heavyweight showdown.
