Saunders had a great run in boxing. He started as an amateur, even representing Team GB at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. When he turned pro in 2009, he quickly made a name for himself. He won his first world title in 2015, knocking out Andy Lee for the middleweight belt. Four years later, he grabbed another title in the super middleweight division by beating Shefat Isufi.
His career has some big wins, including victories over Chris Eubank Jr, David Lemieux, and Willie Monroe Jr. But his last fight didn't go as planned. He faced Canelo Alvarez in a unification bout for the super middleweight title. Saunders started strong but got caught with a huge uppercut that broke his orbital bone. The injury forced him to stop fighting, handing him his first professional loss.
Since then, Saunders has been out of the spotlight. But in a recent interview with Box Nation, he shared that he's been enjoying some training lately. He also mentioned he's in a good place financially, feeling "lucky and blessed" for what the sport has given him.
When asked about a potential comeback, Saunders had one name in mind: Chris Eubank Jr. He said:
"If there was a fight that would give me that urge to put them back on it would most definitely be Eubank."
This isn't just any call-out. Saunders and Eubank Jr have history. They fought back in 2015, with Saunders coming out on top. A rematch would definitely get fans excited.
Right now, Eubank Jr has his hands full with a grudge match against Conor Benn. But if he wins that fight, a rematch with Saunders could be a popular next move.
Will we see Saunders back in the ring soon? Only time will tell. But one thing's for sure - a rematch with Eubank Jr would be a fight many boxing fans would love to see.
