Shannon Briggs, the former WBO heavyweight champion, wants to fight Deontay Wilder in Alabama. The 53-year-old "Cannon" is looking to make a comeback and sees Wilder as the perfect opponent.
Briggs last stepped into the ring in 2016, knocking out Emilio Zarate in the first round. With 68 fights under his belt, he's faced some of boxing's biggest names, including Lennox Lewis, George Foreman, and Wladimir Klitschko. Briggs held the WBO belt from 2006 to 2007 and was known for his powerful punches.
On the other hand, Wilder, nicknamed "The Bronze Bomber," confirmed he will be making a return after suffering defeats to Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang. Wilder lost his WBC belt to Tyson Fury in 2020 and is now looking to climb back to the top of the heavyweight division.
Briggs shared his thoughts with Fight Hub TV:
"I would like to fight him, I think it would be a great fight in Alabama when he comes back. I never really retired, they just won't fight me. I'm going to fight in March so if he wants to go, we can go."
The heavyweight landscape has changed dramatically in recent years. Oleksandr Usyk now reigns as the undisputed champion, having defeated both Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury across four fights. Usyk's rise to the top came after dominating the cruiserweight division.
Meanwhile, Tyson Fury called it quits in January, and Anthony Joshua is rebuilding his career after a knockout loss to Daniel Dubois. These changes have opened up opportunities for veterans like Briggs to make their mark once again.
Briggs plans to return to the ring in March, setting the stage for a potential clash with Wilder later in the year. The fight would certainly grab headlines, pitting two big punchers against each other in what could be an explosive showdown.
