Tony Bellew Names His Current Favorite Fighter: "He's Ruthless"

Bellew knows a thing or two about the fight game. He climbed through the ranks, winning belts at every level. He lost to Nathan Cleverly in 2011 but got his revenge in 2014. His first shot at a major world title ended in defeat to Adonis Stevenson. But Bellew bounced back, grabbing the WBC cruiserweight crown in 2016 and defending it against BJ Flores. He then moved up to heavyweight and beat David Haye twice. His last fight was a loss to Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed cruiserweight title in 2018.

Now, Bellew's got his eye on Davis. In a chat with Froch on Fighting, he said:

"[Gervonta] 'Tank' Davis.' He's just ruthless. He's a killer. Gervonta Davis's strengths are people underestimate his boxing ability. His IQ is fantastic. Look at how he places his shots. Look at the finishing punches he finds. People miss that, they just go 'he's so powerful, he's just a knockout puncher.'"

Bellew didn't stop there. He dug deeper into what makes Davis so special:

"They don't see the cute things he does. Watch the cute things he does inside. Look how he's looking for you to make mistakes. He sets traps. The punch he drops Garcia with the first time it's an amazing trap he sets. The one he gets Frank Martin with as well. It's two completely different styles."

Davis hasn't been too busy lately, but his wins over Ryan Garcia and Leo Santa Cruz were big. He beat Frank Martin earlier this year. Now, he's set to defend his WBA belt against Lamont Roach on March 1.

Looking ahead, Davis could face some tough opponents. There's Shakur Stevenson, the WBC star, Keyshawn Davis who holds the WBO title, and Vasiliy Lomachenko with the IBF strap. But Davis might hang up his gloves soon. He's talked about retiring or taking a long break at the end of this year, at just 31 years old.
