McCall's return comes 30 years after his biggest career win. In 1994, he knocked out Lennox Lewis in the second round to grab the WBC title. Since then, he's had a long and winding career in the sport.
Known as "The Atomic Bull," McCall started his pro journey back in 1985. He's racked up 60 wins in 76 fights. His last bout was in November 2023, where he beat Stacy Frazier for his 60th victory.
McCall's upcoming opponent is Gary Cobia. Cobia's pro career kicked off in 2012, but he's only had seven fights. His last match was a first-round knockout loss to Jesse West in Wendover back in 2014.
"To me, it's a blessing to step in the ring with somebody I used to watch as a kid and thought of as a hero," Cobia said. "I'm going to give it my all. Oliver is more experienced than I, but I have been working on a great boxing strategy. I believe my hand will be raised that night."
At first, there were worries about whether Cobia would be allowed to face the 59-year-old McCall. But those concerns have been put to rest. Cobia has now got his boxing license for Tennessee.
McCall's return stands in stark contrast to his old rival, Lennox Lewis. Lewis, seen as one of the best heavyweights ever, has been retired for over two decades.
After beating McCall, Lewis went on to cement his place in boxing history. McCall, on the other hand, lost his WBC title to Frank Bruno in 1995. He then faced Lewis again in 1997, losing by fifth-round knockout.
Now, at an age when most boxers have long hung up their gloves, McCall is proving he's not done yet. His upcoming fight promises to be an interesting clash between experience and determination.
