Floyd Mayweather's boxing career stands out as one of the most impressive in the sport's history. He retired with a perfect 50-0 record and world titles in five weight classes, from super featherweight to light middleweight.
Oscar De La Hoya, known as "The Golden Boy" and a former opponent of Mayweather, recently shared his thoughts on how the Grand Rapids, Michigan native would have fared in the 1980s boxing scene. In an interview on Club Shay Shay, De La Hoya said:
"You asked me the question about the 80's and the 'four kings' right, Leonard, Duran and Hearns and Hagler. It would have been quite interesting, I would have probably called it the 'five kings', you know he's [Mayweather] that worthy of fighting those guys and making great fights."
De La Hoya's comments highlight Mayweather's exceptional skills and suggest he would have been competitive against the legendary boxers of the 1980s, often referred to as the "Golden era" of boxing.
Mayweather's career boasts notable victories over top-tier opponents like Juan Manuel Marquez, Miguel Cotto, Canelo Alvarez, and Manny Pacquiao. His fight against Pacquiao, dubbed the "Fight Of The Century," was highly anticipated but didn't quite live up to the hype.
Mayweather's final professional fight took place in August 2017, where he secured a 10th round stoppage against MMA star Conor McGregor. Since then, he's participated in exhibition matches against Logan Paul, Aaron Chalmers, and Tenshin Nasukawa.
At 47 years old, Mayweather might not be done with the ring just yet. There are rumors of a potential return in 2025, though this remains unconfirmed.
