Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, the Mexican boxing superstar, gave his thoughts on the match-up. In an interview with IFL TV, Canelo said:
"It's gonna be a good fight. 50/50 fight."
Benavidez had been chasing a fight with Canelo at super-middleweight for a while. He's now decided to move up to the light-heavyweight ranks. In his debut at 175 pounds, Benavidez scored a points win over Oleksandr Gvozdyk.
Morrell, who's undefeated in 11 fights with nine knockouts, also recently made the jump from 168 pounds. He won his first fight at light-heavyweight, beating Radivoje Kalajdzic over twelve rounds.
The upcoming fight between Benavidez and Morrell will have two belts on the line. Morrell's Regular WBA belt and Benavidez' WBC Interim Title will be up for grabs. The winner will likely get a shot at the undisputed champion, either Artur Beterbiev or Dmitry Bivol.
There's already some bad blood between the two fighters, which should make for an exciting match-up.
Benavidez has made it clear he's still interested in a fight with Canelo. However, he doesn't see himself moving back down to super-middleweight. His strategy seems to be winning belts at 175 to increase his bargaining power.
Canelo has his own history at light-heavyweight. He beat Sergey Kovalev but lost to Dmitry Bivol in his two attempts at the weight class.
The fight between Benavidez and Morrell promises to be a thrilling encounter. With Canelo calling it a 50/50 fight, fans can expect a closely contested battle between two talented boxers looking to make their mark in the light-heavyweight division.
