Roy Jones Jr has set a hefty price tag on a potential fight with Jake Paul. The boxing legend wants $20 million to step in the ring with the former YouTuber turned boxer.
Paul, 27, has built an 11-1 record in boxing, carefully choosing his opponents. He's mostly faced retired or aging mixed martial artists, with his sole loss coming against professional boxer Tommy Fury. Recently, Paul scored an easy points victory over Mike Tyson in an eight-round bout in Texas.
Jones Jr, who commentated on the Paul-Tyson fight, believes a matchup between him and Paul would be an even bigger event. Speaking to Covers.com, Jones Jr laid out his condition for the fight.
"I was the last person to fight Mike, so why would I take anything less than $20 million? Don't waste my time."
The 55-year-old Jones Jr thinks he'd fare better against Paul than Tyson did. He explained:
"Jake's a big kid – he's a power puncher – but I just feel that my legs at 55 are much better than Mike's legs at 58. I used to use my legs when I fought; Mike never really used his legs when he fought. My legs are in better shape, and I could get to Jake a bit easier than Mike did."
Jones Jr's connection to this potential matchup goes beyond his commentary role. He was the last person to face Tyson in an exhibition bout in 2021. Now, he's positioning himself as a possible next opponent for Paul.
After the Tyson fight, Paul denied claims that the bout was scripted. He's also been linked with potential fights against other boxing and MMA stars like Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor.
As for Jones Jr's $20 million demand, it remains to be seen if Paul or any promoter will meet that price. But one thing's for sure: the boxing legend won't be stepping into the ring for anything less.
