Gervonta Davis and Oscar De La Hoya are in two different eras of boxing, but that didn't stop De La Hoya from sharing how he'd beat 'Tank' in his prime.
De La Hoya was once the biggest star in boxing. He won titles in six divisions and unified two belts in the lightweight ranks. Now, Davis holds the WBA World Title at 135 pounds and is seen as the man to beat.
When asked how he'd approach a fight with Davis in his prime, De La Hoya first joked that he'd "take a bat in there." He then got serious and laid out his strategy.
"Look, I fought every style. I'm a huge advocate of the jab. That's it. The jab stops everything, no matter what. What you do after, it's on you. I would throw double, triple, four, five jabs and then go combinations left and right. I love throwing five, six punch combinations. On your toes. You gotta fight him long."
De La Hoya's plan relies on his jab and staying at range. It's a strategy that served him well against the likes of Julio Cesar Chavez, Ike Quartey, Pernell Whittaker, and Fernando Vargas.
Davis, from Baltimore, has built a fearsome reputation. He's knocked out 28 of his 30 opponents and recently stopped both Ryan Garcia and Frank Martin.
Davis will defend his title against Lamont Roach Jr on March 1 in Brooklyn, New York. It's another step towards his goal of being the best pound-for-pound fighter in boxing, a title De La Hoya once held.
