Roy Jones Jr. says Sugar Ray Leonard is the only fighter who could beat Floyd Mayweather in his prime. The boxing legend shared this opinion in a recent interview with Sports Illustrated.
Jones Jr. knows a thing or two about being at the top of the sport. He dominated for more than three decades, winning world titles in four divisions from middleweight to heavyweight. He was the first fighter in 106 years to grab a heavyweight title after starting at middleweight. His speed and agility in the ring were unmatched, and he scored big wins over James Toney, Bernard Hopkins, and John Ruiz.
Mayweather's career was just as impressive. He retired with a perfect 50-0 record, including 27 knockouts. He held titles in five weight classes from super featherweight to super welterweight. His list of victories includes names like Canelo Alvarez, Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto, and even MMA star Conor McGregor.
But when asked who could beat Mayweather at his best, Jones Jr. didn't hesitate. He told Sports Illustrated:
"I would take Sugar Ray Leonard. That taking nothing away from Floyd, fought for currency, Ray fought for legacy."
Leonard was part of the 'Four Kings' alongside Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns, and Marvin Hagler. He won world titles in five weight classes and was the undisputed welterweight champion. His career ended with 36 wins from 40 fights after a loss to Hector Camacho in 1997.
Jones Jr.'s pick might surprise some, but it shows the high regard he has for Leonard's skills and mindset. It's a fascinating matchup to imagine, pitting two of boxing's all-time greats against each other in their prime.
