Crawford, known as 'Bud', is a slick, switch-hitting technician who just won the WBA World Title at super-welterweight against Israil Madrimov. He wants to prove he's the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Canelo, on the other hand, is an aggressive, powerful counter-puncher who rules the super-middleweight division.
The potential fight has some big hurdles. There's a two-division weight gap between them. Crawford would need to gain 14 pounds to meet Canelo at super-middleweight. Plus, Canelo wasn't interested at first.
Crawford has been calling out Canelo respectfully but clearly wants the fight. Canelo initially said no, claiming he wouldn't get credit for beating a smaller fighter. But he's since changed his tune, saying he'll take any fight if the money's right. That gives Crawford a small chance.
Bob Arum shared his thoughts on the potential matchup with Fight Hub TV:
"I think Canelo wipes the floor with him. I love Crawford, I told you when Crawford was fighting Spence that Crawford would beat the hell out of him. But Canelo is a different proposition. It's an interesting fight, but I think there's only one winner. Canelo is used to fighting at a particular level and I don't think that Terence can hurt Canelo, but Canelo can hurt Terence."
Arum respects Crawford but thinks Canelo's power and experience at a higher weight will be too much. Crawford isn't worried about these opinions. He believes this fight can add to his impressive career. If he can't make it happen, he might even retire.
The clash of styles would be fascinating, but the weight difference is a big issue. We'll have to wait and see if this dream matchup becomes a reality.
