Jake Paul beat Mike Tyson in a boxing match this month. The 27-year-old content creator turned fighter won by a clear unanimous decision over the 58-year-old former heavyweight world champion in an 8-round bout with 2-minute rounds.
The match, promoted under Paul's MVP banner, drew criticism from boxing figures like Oscar De La Hoya and Carl Froch. They questioned the matchmaking and raised concerns about potential risks to Tyson due to the significant age difference between the fighters.
Shannon Briggs, a former heavyweight world champion known as 'The Cannon', reacted strongly to the event. He shared his thoughts on Instagram:
"I feel responsible. That's why Mike was mad at me when we did the slap boxing thing, he was like 'you trained Jake and Logan Paul.' And I didn't understand at first, but YouTube boxing… I feel responsible. I started it, not I gotta end it. I gotta hurt one of them. All of them."
Briggs claims he played a part in the Paul brothers' initial boxing training camps. Now, he feels a need to step in and put a stop to what he helped create.
Briggs had a formidable career himself, known for his punching power and love of a fire fight. He finished 37 of his 68 fights in the first round and won the WBO Heavyweight World Title in 2006, though he lost it in his first defense the following year. His last fight was in 2016, and at 52, he's been talking about a potential comeback.
After his win over Tyson, Jake Paul says he's moving on from boxing veterans. He's looking for his next big event and insists he'll win a legitimate world title. But some critics point out he's been reluctant to take on opportunities offered by current titleholders.
As for Briggs, it looks like he's missed his chance to face Paul in the ring. The young fighter seems set on pursuing other options for his next bout.
