Oscar De La Hoya Picks Surprise Winner for Davis-Lomachenko Bout: "Nobody Expects This"

Gervonta Davis and Vasily Lomachenko might face off in 2025, despite recent setbacks in their fight negotiations. Oscar De La Hoya thinks Davis will come out on top if the bout happens.

Earlier this year, Lomachenko won the vacant IBF Lightweight World Title against George Kambosos Jr. Davis defended his WBA belt a few months later with a knockout victory over Frank Martin.

Talks for a fight between the two champions started off well, with promoter Bob Arum feeling confident. But Lomachenko pulled out, saying he wasn't motivated to fight in 2024. He's not retiring, though, and could return in 2025 with Davis as a likely opponent.

The break in negotiations doesn't mean the fight won't happen eventually. Oscar De La Hoya shared his thoughts on the potential matchup in an interview with ES News.

"I think it'll be a good fight, but I do think that Tank with the youth and with Loma kind of losing a step, and I don't say that with any disrespect it just happens, it just does, father time catches up to you. But I think it's the perfect time for Tank to dethrone Lomachenko but it will be one hell of a fight."

De La Hoya believes Davis' youth gives him an edge over Lomachenko, who he thinks is slowing down. He expects an exciting fight if it happens.

Davis will likely return to the ring in November, but his opponent hasn't been announced yet. Fans want to see him fight Shakur Stevenson, the WBC Champion, but that match-up will probably be delayed.

Stevenson might end up facing Joe Cordina instead, who's moving up from the super-featherweight division. For now, boxing fans will have to wait and see how these potential fights play out in the coming months.
