Anthony Joshua wants to establish a long-term working relationship with his new coach. The former heavyweight champion began working with renowned trainer Derrick James ahead of his fight against Jermain Franklin in April in London. Joshua won by a convincing decision in a bout that was viewed positively by many, although rather unimpressively.

Joshua and his promoter Eddie Hearn have stated that three fights will be their priority this year, including one fight in the summer. However, shortly after Franklin's victory, Joshua announced that he did not intend to fight until December. It was revealed that Joshua was preparing to negotiate a big fight in the Middle East at the end of the year against a well-known contender, possibly former world champion Deontay Wilder.

In a recent interview, Joshua stated that there is still a chance he could return in the summer. However, this decision, as he made clear, would be largely dependent on the approval of Derrick James.

“I thought that since I changed three coaches in three years, it would be good to develop and work under my new coach, and by the time I return to the ring, I would have achieved everything and implemented everything that he wants, Joshua said in an interview with Sky Sports. “But the only way to test everything he teaches me is to fight, not to think. I don't want to lie to the fans and say that I will fight on that date, while negotiations are still ongoing behind the scenes. I just wanted to draw the line and say, "I won't fight until that date."

“If my coach and I decide to change our minds, I guess I can afford to change my mind, right? So I can fight in July or August if I want to. Although right now the date of the summer fight is not being discussed, but everything can change if my coach is happy with what he sees, ”added Joshua.
