Saul Alvarez (58-2-2, 39 KOs) underwent surgery on his left wrist on Tuesday and may not return to the ring until a year later. The Mexican was injured in Saturday's fight with Gennady Golovkin, which ended with his unanimous victory on points.
At a press conference after Saturday's speech, Canelo admitted that he had problems with his wrist while preparing for last year's fight with Caleb Plant. Over the past two years, Alvarez has fought six professional fights - there has not been such an active world champion in four weight categories for at least ten years.
The 32-year-old Mexican initially planned to hold his next professional fight in May, when he could have a rematch with Dmitry Bivol. However, it is not yet clear whether Alvarez will have to wait until September next year for his return to the ring.
