The first rounds of the meeting were close with a slight advantage for Canelo. Traces from the Mexican's blows soon began to appear on Golovkin's reddened face. Canelo gradually ramped up the aggression while the 40 year old GGG seemed unable to pull the trigger of his powerful punches. A desperate Golovkin recovered a bit in the later rounds, but it was too late. The judges' notes were surprisingly close: 116-112 and twice 115-113.
