For Anthony Joshua, this trip became about far more than a boxing event. The former heavyweight champion traveled to Kyiv on March 20 at the invitation of Oleksandr Usyk and came away saying he plans to return after experiencing both the city and its people firsthand. For Joshua, the visit also offered a different kind of spotlight than the one American fans are used to seeing around him — not fight-week hype, but a personal show of respect and connection.
During his stay in the Ukrainian capital, Joshua attended the Rising Stars boxing event promoted by Usyk 17 Promotions. He also spent time walking through Kyiv with Usyk and visited the memorial honoring fallen defenders of Ukraine in the heart of the city.
Joshua said the experience left a strong impression on him, describing Ukraine as both powerful and heartfelt. He noted that this was his first time in the country and said he fully intends to come back. This visit, he explained, was centered on boxing, but next time he hopes to return simply to relax and take in the atmosphere again.
He also spoke warmly about the reception he received, praising Ukrainians as open, sincere and generous. Joshua joked that he may need to buy another suitcase because of how many gifts he was given during the trip. He specifically thanked those who presented him with a T-shirt bearing the word Ukraine, saying it will now be with him for every training session as a small gesture of gratitude and respect.
For now, Joshua heads back home with a memorable first impression — and with a clear sign that his connection to Usyk’s homeland may not end with this visit.
