Promoter Eddie Hearn is of the firm opinion that the upcoming trilogy fight between Saul Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin is on a different level, at least financially, from a potential welterweight bout between the undefeated Errol Spence and Terence Crawford.
Canelo will face Golovkin for the third time on September 17 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The event will be held in the United States via a paid broadcast on DAZN.
Negotiations on Spence Crawford are currently moving towards organizing a meeting for the fall. If they are successful, it will most likely be seen on the Showtime TV channel.
At the same time, Hearn believes that neither Spence nor Crawford have the necessary experience in attracting a large number of paid views.
On the other hand, Canelo has already racked up a large number of pay-per-views, although his DAZN PPV numbers fall short of the seven figures he generated on HBO and Showtime. The first two fights with Golovkin took place on HBO PPV and brought in at least a million buys for each event.
“Spence vs Crawford, what a fight. None of them collected enough purchases of broadcasts yet. When you talk about a guy like Canelo who is constantly giving out 600,000 purchases, 700,000 purchases, a million purchases, they are talking about global reach. You can't compare these fights," Hearn said in an interview with DAZN.
“Boxing, the boxing community, is much narrower than the rest of the world. In boxing, these are both outstanding fights, but one is a fight between two legends and the other is a fight between two outstanding elite champions,” Hearn added.
