Duva: Kovalev - Alvarez rematch is likely to take place in January

Andrew Karlov Sept. 5, 2018, 5:11 a.m.

Former light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev of Russia will fight next against Colombian Eleider Alvarez, the bout with a high probability will take place in January, the promoter Kathy Duva said.

Kovalyov lost to Alvarez in August and lost his WBO light heavyweight belt, and then hinted on his retirement. But as a result, the Russian decided to use the option in the contract for a rematch. Before this, the option of organizing a fight between Alvarez and another WBA champion Dmitry Bivol on December 8 in the United States was considered.

"Sergei will have a rematch with Alvarez, and most likely this fight will be in January, but we are still working on the details, which is why we are working on the next rival of Bivol. There are no confirmed agreements yet," Kathy Duva said.
