2012 Olympic champion Yegor Mehontsev shared his impressions of the match between Sergey Kovalev and Eleider Alvarez, in which the Russian lost to his opponent in the 7th and lost the WBO light heavyweight title.

"It was very difficult to recover from the first punch Sergey missed. I did not have the opportunity to watch the fight live, I ran a marathon. I watched the highlights of the last round, the moment when Sergey was knocked out.

“Kovalev must analyse himself. Maybe there were some gaps in the preparation, maybe he just tired of boxing already. Everyone is different; a person is a very complex thing, especially his mentality. He probably will tell you what happened. He will make an analysis. Maybe he will not say everything, but at least something.

“It is difficult to comment on the career ending or a possible rematch, it is personal. No one will decide for him and no one will advise him. Any decision will be supported by his comrades. He did a lot, achieved a lot, earned a lot. Professional boxing is a business. If he decided that it was enough for him, it is his right. Especially it's his health, he has a family, a child," Mekhontsev said.
