Wilder was arrested in his native Tuscaloosa in June after the police discovered marijuana in his car. Initially, Wilder was stopped for a window tint violation. Hearing the smell of marijuana police officers searched the car and found a small amount of it on the console of the car.

Attorney Paul Patterson said that marijuana did not belong to Wilder. Patterson added that the boxer had just returned from a trip in which other people had access to the car.
