Welterweight champion Kell Brook would have been considered to be a picture of health, although considering he weighed 160 pounds plus for his last fight in September against Gennady Golovkin, some worries have now crept in. Brook already seemed to be uncharacteristically on weight with time to spare for his 147 pound battle with mandatory challenger Spence at Brammall Lane as the Yorkshireman was ripped up and looked skinnier than usual during his latest fight camp.
As fight week for May 27 approaches, pundit and good friend Johnny Nelson has raised his own doubts about how Brook was able to boil down so successfully for Spence when he'd struggled so much in the past.
"Going in there (against GGG) you thought Kell was a solid, chunky light-middleweight. Now he's going back down to welterweight and that's an issue," Nelson told.
"The weight is the issue, it's my worry. Kell is a big, strong unit so he's having to squeeze down to welterweight. You have to diet, you need serious discipline, you need to be on point with it. He's not a happy bunny when he has to get down to welterweight. Each time he does it, it gets harder and harder."
Nelson added his prediction that Brook won't have any problems at all on the scales next week.
"He will make the weight regardless, but it depends how he makes it. Will he be strong? Spence Jr's team are expecting this fight to hinge on how Kell makes the weight, and what he looks like."
Losing in five rounds to Golovkin, Brook was fully expected to debut at 154 pounds this spring and only fight night will tell if the British star made the right decision to participate in another potentially damaging attempt to campaign at the lower limit.
