IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook tackles the undefeated mandatory challenger Errol Spence Jr., touted as the next big thing at 147 pounds, on May 27 at his beloved Brammall Lane in Sheffield after months of speculation regarding a possible move up in weight.
Brook lost for the first time in his career against Gennady Golovkin up at middleweight last September but there was never any danger the 30 year-old would head north up the divisions with a number one contender to address at the lower limit.
“I saw many people talk about how I would avoid Errol Spence - they don’t know me, they don’t know what I’m about,” said Brook. “All I’ve ever wanted to do is to give the fans the fights they want and they have it right here on May 27. I’m so excited about this fight and also about making history in my city. It’s long been a dream of mine to fight outdoors at Bramall Lane and I’m pleased to do that in the biggest fight in the Welterweight division. I’m going to show the world that I’m the best Welterweight on the planet and I’m going to do it right before my people’s eyes,” he added.
Spence is already being lined up to face Keith Thurman in a three-belt unification at the back end of 2017 should he be successful in Yorkshire as both are signed to Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions. Brook will be aiming to stop that from happening by halting the progress of ‘The Truth’ to potentially steal a massive clash with Thurman for himself before hitting 154 pounds.
