Kamaru Usman

Kamaru Usman is a Nigerian-American mixed martial artist and former UFC Welterweight Champion, widely regarded for his well-rounded skill set, disciplined approach, and consistent performance at the highest level of the sport. Born on May 11, 1987, in Auchi, Nigeria, Usman moved to the United States with his family at the age of eight. His early exposure to wrestling in high school laid the groundwork for a decorated collegiate career and a successful transition into professional MMA. Usman competed in NCAA Division II wrestling at the University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK), where he earned national recognition as a three-time All-American and won the 2010 NCAA Division II national championship at 174 pounds. His wrestling base became a key element of his MMA style, which emphasizes control, positioning, and conditioning. He began his UFC career by winning The Ultimate Fighter 21, showcasing a high level of technical ability and tactical awareness. Following his TUF victory, Usman compiled an impressive winning streak in the UFC's welterweight division, earning a title shot after defeating a series of ranked contenders. On March 2, 2019, Usman captured the UFC Welterweight Championship with a unanimous decision win over Tyron Woodley at UFC 235. His knockout of Masvidal at UFC 261 was among the most notable finishes of his career. Usman held the welterweight title until August 2022, when he lost to Leon Edwards via fifth-round knockout. The two would meet again in a trilogy bout in March 2023, where Edwards retained the title via decision.
