A possible Justin Gaethje vs. Ilia Topuria fight is already generating strong reactions, and Jorge Masvidal made his stance clear when discussing the rumored UFC 308 matchup. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Masvidal said he sees the reigning lightweight champion as a terrible stylistic draw for Gaethje if the bout is finalized later this year.
That matters because the lightweight title picture is suddenly one of the UFC’s busiest. A Topuria win would strengthen his push toward superstar status in a division that still includes names like Islam Makhachev and Charles Oliveira, while a Gaethje upset would instantly reshape the championship conversation and give one of the sport’s most beloved action fighters perhaps the biggest win of his career.
Masvidal pointed to Topuria’s defensive discipline as the key issue. He said Topuria rarely leaves openings, manages distance well, and consistently keeps his head off the center line. In Masvidal’s view, those habits make him a nightmare opponent for a pressure-heavy striker like Gaethje, who has built his reputation on chaos, damage, and attrition.
“Ilia has very good defense, so it’s not like he opens himself up for shots. Ilia is very, very disciplined in how he throws strikes, how he slips his head, how his head is constantly moving off the center line,” Masvidal said. “I don’t think Gaethje has many chances. In my opinion, this is just a very bad fight for Gaethje. But if he wins this fight — damn, right? Like, who the hell could have seen that coming? If he pulls it off, it would be crazy, but I don’t see it. I don’t see that happening.”
From an American fan perspective, that’s what makes the matchup so compelling. Gaethje remains one of the UFC’s most trusted violence guarantees, but Topuria has recently looked like a more complete and efficient finisher. Gaethje still has to prove he can beat an elite champion without getting dragged into a technical deficit, while Topuria would be trying to show his power and polish translate fully against one of the division’s toughest veterans.
If this fight comes together, the biggest thing to watch is whether Gaethje can turn it into a brawl before Topuria’s precision takes over.
