Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler at UFC 303? Dustin Poirier Sees a Favorable Matchup for the Former Champ

Dustin Poirier believes Michael Chandler is the ideal opponent for former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor.

Conor McGregor’s long-discussed return against Michael Chandler remains one of the biggest unresolved stories on the UFC calendar, and Dustin Poirier thinks the matchup lines up well for the Irish star if it lands at UFC 303 in Las Vegas. Speaking recently, the former interim lightweight champion said Chandler presents the kind of fight McGregor can win cleanly if and when he makes his way back to the Octagon.

Poirier’s opinion carries weight because he has shared the cage with both men. McGregor has not fought since his 2021 loss to Poirier, when he suffered a broken leg in their trilogy bout, while Chandler has spent much of the past two years attached to McGregor through coaching duties on The Ultimate Fighter and repeated fight talk that has yet to produce a walkout. That delay has only made the matchup more fascinating to American fans, who still see McGregor as the UFC’s biggest mainstream draw even after a lengthy layoff.

According to Poirier, Chandler’s style is exactly why the fight makes sense for McGregor. In comments published by MMA Fighting, Poirier said he views Chandler as vulnerable, not especially fast at this stage, and too willing to turn fights into chaotic exchanges. Against a precise counter striker like McGregor, that could be a dangerous formula.

The stakes go beyond simple matchmaking. If McGregor wins, the UFC instantly has a blockbuster option for another major pay-per-view against a top lightweight or welterweight name. If Chandler wins, he likely scores the biggest victory of his career and finally cashes in on years of promotional build. Chandler also enters any McGregor fight with pressure attached: despite his fan-friendly style, he has lost four of his six UFC appearances, a stat that shows both his risk-heavy approach and his urgency.

For McGregor, the real question is timing and sharpness after such a long absence. For Chandler, it is whether aggression can overwhelm precision before counters start landing. If this fight is finally booked, those two themes will define everything from the opening bell to what comes next in the division.
