"I trained fighters like Terry and Orlin Norris, I raised many champions, but everyone will remember me as Golovkin's coach," Abel Sanchez believes. Golovkin's and Sanchez's paths crossed when Gennady moved from Germany to America. Sanchez received an offer from "Triple G's" manager and, as he admits, at first he didn't even know whom he was training. Sanchez was not familiar with the previous achievements of the Kazakhstani boxer but quickly realized whom he was dealing with.

"After a week of working together, I thought: 'Damn, this is going to be another Julio Cesar Chavez, only in middleweight.' I knew body shots would become his hallmark. Then I told him: 'Give me 3-4 years to do what I think is best for you, and I'll make you the most avoided fighter in the world.' And that's how it turned out. Gennady never questioned my ideas, never argued with me, he just allowed me to be his coach, trusted me, and did everything I asked. He never doubted anything, just obediently carried out every task," the coach stated.

In 2019, the parties parted ways before Golovkin's fight with Steve Rolls.
