Davis and Roach fought to a draw in March at the Barclays Center in New York. Many fans thought Roach did enough to win that night. The two were expected to run it back, but things have gone quiet.
Lamont Roach Sr., Roach's father and trainer, shared an update on the situation:
"We ain't heard nothing about no later date yet. We was told it could get pushed back a week or two, but then that went away too. It pretty much wasn't happening right then."
With the Roach rematch on hold, a surprising name has come up as a potential opponent for Davis - Manny Pacquiao. The Filipino boxing legend just fought to a majority decision draw against Mario Barrios for the WBC welterweight championship on July 19. At 46, Pacquiao tried to become the oldest world welterweight champion.
Sean Gibbons, Pacquiao's manager, mentioned Davis as a possible future opponent:
"You know, if Manny wants to continue fighting, there's fighters like Rolly Romero, there's fighters like Gervonta Davis."
Pacquiao himself seems open to the idea. In an interview with Seconds Out, he said:
"I can fight anybody, even like Gervonta Davis … I'm not scared of anybody."
The Filipino star even suggested a catchweight for the potential matchup:
"If he want, then if he come up to 147 then we can fight … 145 maybe. [His punch power] is not a problem for me because I'm experienced fighter."
Davis, the 30-year-old unbeaten WBA lightweight champion from Baltimore, has his own issues to deal with. He got arrested on a domestic violence charge in Miami in June.
The boxing world will keep a close eye on Davis' next move. Will he face Roach again, take on the legendary Pacquiao, or find a different opponent altogether? Only time will tell.
