Paul got into boxing with a huge following but no amateur experience. He started by fighting older UFC stars who weren't boxers. Last year, he fought Mike Tyson in a record-breaking but disappointing eight-round bout. This June, he beat Julio Cesar Chavez Jr by unanimous decision.
Trainer-turned-analyst Teddy Atlas thinks Paul should go after Badou Jack. On his YouTube show "The Fight," Atlas said:
"Jack's a 42-year-old world champion with a real belt. Paul could use his young legs to try and get a shot at the title."
Jack holds the WBC Cruiserweight Championship. He won it in Saudi Arabia last year, beating Ilunga Makabu on the undercard of Paul's fight with Tommy Fury. That was Paul's only loss so far. Jack used to be champion at super middleweight and light heavyweight too. He's got a rematch coming up with Norair Mikaeljan.
But it won't be easy for Paul to get a shot at Jack. WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman says Paul must face a ranked contender first. That kind of fight might not bring in as much money as Paul usually makes. You can check out the WBC rankings here.
There's another option on the table. Paul's team is in early talks with Anthony Joshua. AJ's a two-time heavyweight champ and Olympic gold medalist. That'd be a big step up for Paul.
Paul's taking an unusual path from social media celebrity to professional boxer. He's got one loss on his record, but he's not giving up on his goal to become a legitimate world champion.
