Since moving to lightweight in 2019, Davis has been a major draw but has only captured the WBA title. He's struggled to secure fights with other top lightweights, leaving fans wanting more.
Davis did score a knockout victory in a mega fight against Ryan Garcia, though no belt was on the line. He also picked up the WBA (regular) super lightweight title by defeating Mario Barrios in 2021.
But Davis's hardest fight came earlier this year when he drew with Lamont Roach Jr. This bout, coupled with legal issues, has cast doubt on his future in the sport.
Timothy Bradley, former world champion turned analyst, questions Davis's commitment to boxing. Bradley told reporters:
"I think Gervonta Davis is looking for a big payday and he is going to sail off. So if that Gervonta Davis gets into the ring with Shakur, I got Shakur all day. All day, seven days a week... you got one of the best defensive fighters if not the best defensive fighter in the game, you got one of the most accurate fighters, power punchers in the game as well. But you have one who throws less. Out of any of these guys at 135 [Davis] throws the least amount of punches."
Bradley's comments hint at a potential showdown between Davis and rising star Shakur Stevenson. The match-up could prove to be Davis's toughest test yet, given Stevenson's defensive prowess.
Davis's power punching has bailed him out of tricky situations before. Bradley cautions that Davis only needs one big punch to floor Stevenson. But the question remains: Will Davis take that risk?
As the lightweight division sees a potential new king emerging in Stevenson, Davis faces a crossroads. His future in boxing hangs in the balance, with fans and experts alike wondering if he still has the hunger to compete at the highest level.
