Floyd Mayweather and Roy Jones Jr are getting into a war of words. The two retired American boxing legends have been going at it on social media lately.
It all started when Jones backed Sugar Ray Leonard in a fantasy fight against Mayweather. Mayweather didn't take kindly to that and fired back by posting a video of Jones' knockout defeats.
Jones, who's 56 and from Pensacola, last stepped into the ring in April 2023. He lost a majority decision to Anthony 'Showtime' Pettis. But Jones isn't ready to hang up his gloves just yet. He's open to returning to the ring, especially if it means facing Mayweather.
Mayweather, on the other hand, hasn't had a professional fight since 2017. He beat Conor McGregor in a big crossover event in Las Vegas, pushing his perfect record to 50-0. Since then, he's been keeping busy with exhibition bouts. He's faced off against Tenshin Nasukawa, Logan Paul, and John Gotti III in these non-official matches.
Former WBO world heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs thinks he knows who'd win if these two legends faced off. In a recent interview, Briggs said:
"Who wins Mayweather vs Roy Jones? Roy Jones, Roy Jones. You know what I'm saying?"
If this match-up happens, it'll likely be an exhibition contest. But Jones wants more. He's pushing for a sanctioned bout with Mayweather, not just an exhibition. We'll have to wait and see if these two boxing greats can come to an agreement and give fans the showdown they're asking for.
