Floyd Mayweather edges out Manny Pacquiao as the better fighter, according to boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard. The former champion based his assessment on fundamental boxing skills when comparing the two iconic fighters.
Leonard shared his thoughts in a recent interview with Dontaes Boxing Nation. He praised both fighters but gave Mayweather the edge in terms of technical ability.
"Fundamentally speaking, Floyd's on top, he's sound. I love Pacquiao, he's been blessed with incredible hand speed and power as he moved up in weight, they both have been blessed with rare qualities."
The comparison between Mayweather and Pacquiao has been a hot topic since their much-hyped "Fight of the Century" in 2015. The bout took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on May 2, with the WBC, WBA, and WBO world welterweight titles on the line. Mayweather won by unanimous decision after 12 rounds, but the fight didn't live up to the massive expectations surrounding it.
Since that historic matchup, both fighters have taken different paths. Mayweather retired in 2017 with a perfect 50-0 record after a huge crossover battle against MMA star Conor McGregor. Pacquiao, on the other hand, initially retired in 2021 but has since announced a comeback. The Filipino icon plans to face Mario Barrios for the WBC world welterweight championship in Las Vegas on July 19, 2023.
