Mike McCallum, the legendary Jamaican boxer known as "The Bodysnatcher," has died at 68. The three-time world champion was found lifeless by the roadside in Las Vegas after stopping his car on his way to the gym.
McCallum made history as the first Jamaican boxer to win a world title. He grabbed the WBA junior middleweight belt in 1984 by beating Sean Mannion at Madison Square Garden in New York. The fighter went on to claim titles in the middleweight and light heavyweight divisions too.
The boxer's nickname, "The Bodysnatcher," came from his brutal and blunt body punches. These shots helped him rack up an impressive record of 49 wins (36 by knockout), 5 losses, and 1 draw throughout his career.
Jamaica's Minister of Sport, Olivia Grange, shared her thoughts on McCallum's passing:
"It was with deep sadness that I learned of the passing of Jamaican three-time world boxing champion, Michael McKenzie McCallum. I express my personal condolences to his mother, siblings and children. On behalf of the Ministry of Sport, I take this opportunity to express our condolences to the family and friends of this legendary Jamaican."
The Las Vegas Police Department is looking into McCallum's death. They haven't shared the cause yet. The Jamaica Observer reported that McCallum felt unwell and pulled over before he was found.
McCallum's impact on boxing was huge. The Hall of Fame recognized his achievements in 2003, cementing his place among the sport's greats. His legacy as a fierce competitor and a trailblazer for Jamaican boxing will live on.
