Jaime Munguia's career hit a snag after a VADA test found testosterone metabolites in his system. The positive result came after his win over Bruno Surace in Saudi Arabia on May 3, 2024.
Munguia (45-2) had been trying to get back on track. He lost to Canelo Alvarez and Bruno Surace earlier in 2024. To turn things around, he started training with Eddy Reynoso, who's known for working with Saul Alvarez. The move seemed to pay off when Munguia beat Surace in their rematch by unanimous decision.
But now, that victory might not stand. If the B sample confirms the initial result, Munguia could lose the win, face a suspension, and possibly get fined.
Munguia says he didn't do anything wrong. He put out a video and a statement claiming he's innocent and asked for his B sample to be tested.
World Boxing Council (WBC) President Mauricio Sulaiman is backing Munguia for now. He told TV Azteca:
"Obviously with Munguia we are 100 percent, only he knows what happened. What I am very clear about is that we believe in Munguia and surely he will clarify it soon and Eddy Reynoso is only dedicated to training."
Sulaiman also warned against jumping to conclusions:
"We have had many cases where there is an adverse result and unfortunately by nature we all come to the conclusion that there is guilt. Jaime Munguia is being crucified, they are throwing Eddy Reynoso under the bus, who has absolutely nothing to do with it."
He added:
"I would like to express unconditional support for Jaime Munguia, obviously Reynoso has nothing to do with it and we are going to give him every opportunity to prove his innocence and in case he is guilty, that he assumes the consequences."
The boxing world will have to wait for the B sample results to know what's next for Munguia. For now, his attempt to climb back to the top of the sport has hit a major roadblock.
